Muraje: Warrior of Carema Heroic Viticulture
Located just next to Valle d'Aosta, the mountainous wine regions of Carema (not camera!) in Piedmont is one of the best kept secrets in the region.
For centuries, the region was famous for its Nebbiolo wines, made from vines trained on local pergola called "Topia". Protected by the mountain against cold winds from the north, Carema is a south facing amphitheater with over 120 hectares of planted vines in the early 1900s. This is a place to feel the constant struggle between humans and nature. All vineyards are protected by stone terraces, and in some parts, soils were so thin that locals had to carry soils from the local river banks to the vineyards. This region easily qualifies as "heroic viticulture", in fact, we would like to use the term "courageous viticulture" to describe the wines of Carema.
Deborah Santini together with her husband Federico established the winery Muraje in 2012. Wines were first made in Le Piane, a winery in Boca by their friend Christoph Kuenzli, who is supportive to Deborah's idea. 2017 was the first vintage when all winemaking of Muraje was done at their new winery at Carema.
We are great believers in cool climate Nebbiolo, which are less floral but more herbal. Let's support Deborah and Federico the warrior!
